Character Designs Revisited

So after losing my sketchbook, I was looking over my work and seeing what I had to re-do in order to catch up on my stuff and during this process I decided to revisit and improve a few of my character designs.

Here’s what I came up with the second time around:

Character Designs (Finalised)

After looking at different games and artists versions of demons I began to finalise the sketches and possible designs I had in mind and came up with 3 finalised gatekeepers: 2 for Violence and 1 for Limbo.

Character Creation

Today our group sat down to discuss our ideas for what our characters could be and their purpose within this world. We have decided that the designs should be simplistic so that the characters can be drawn by all team members as well as by the groups that’ll have this project after us.

In order to give the characters a reason for being there, we did have to alter the storyline a wee bit. Now, instead of the tree stump being actual literal Hell where people are punished for what they’ve done during their lifetime, it’s a sort of a ‘wishing tree’ that can be summoned by humans through rituals or which appears at certain times of the year.

Humans are able to enter this world after it appears to them and each ring presents them with a challenge, which if they succeed allows another of their wishes to be granted, but if they fail will cause hem to be trapped in that layer for eternity, eventually morphing to become one with the environment around them.

We have decided to stick with our idea for characters going from very humanoid to animalistic and to focus on the gatekeepers for each layer. I’m very interested in this world and like how it’s progressing along with my group.

Welcome to Hell (Research)

After getting Hell World I began to look in to Dante’s Inferno as it was one of the main inspirations for the previous group and found that each layer of hell had a different setting and this really interested me as I wondered what would happen if you had committed sins of different levels of severity and how the landscape would influence character design.

After talking with my group we decided that the Hell Tree would only be visible at certain times of year as this fit in with a lot of Pagan lore and also that people would go looking for it, hoping that if they were able to complete tasks given by the gatekeepers of each ring they would be granted anything they asked for. The flip side being that if they failed a task they would be stuck in that ring for eternity as gatekeeper (or at least until someone else failed and took over their place. Then they would be a soul tortured within the ring)

Character Design

As well as presenting our main idea of the world we had created in Creative Elements this week, we changed projects and each group had one member change. I was that person and I joined a new group with Michelle, Rebecca and Dervla.

I instantly loved the project we were given which was based on the concept of Hell’s Rings from Dante’s Inferno but in a tree stump. Kirstin explained their idea and we began to look in to the idea as a group. The challenge we were set this week was to design characters to inhabit the world that was given to us, and as each ring of hell has a different theme we had a lot of scope for what we could do.

We decided that the characters would shift from vaguely humanoid to very demonic or animalistic as you went deeper in to hell and made a list of animals that we felt related to each sin. We then thought it would be a good idea to divide the work load and each tackle a couple of different rings of Hell. I chose Limbo and Violence as they were at quite opposite ends of the scale and I thought this would be interesting however it meant I was designing a total of 4 characters as Violence is split in to 3 smaller rings for murderers and tyrants, suicides and those who had been violent towards God or nature.

For Limbo the character design with be very humanoid as it is the first ring of Hell, we plan on making it a ghost like human while Violence is on the other end of the scale with designs based on snakes, rats and goats.
