Considering the simplicity and style of our new plot, Conánn suggested that we look in to 2D faces considering the difficulties we had had with adding a face to Stumpy’s model without it looking completely terrifying. He said in particular we should look at Pocoyo as a style inspiration.

Before doing this for our new characters, I decided to look at character expression sheets to see how companies were able to get varied expressions for very simple designs. Examples of these are the expression sheets for Ernest et Célestine (2012) by La Parti Productions and Les Armateurs, Yzma as a kitten from The Emperor’s New Groove (2000) and Jiminy Cricket from Pinnochio (1940) both by Disney.

I feel that deciding a set of emotions for our characters is definitely a vital part of the design and will influence our final piece a lot.

After mentioning to Edward in 2nd year that we were thinking of doing 2D animated faces, he sent me this tutorial which seems incredibly helpful. Hopefully this means we’ll be able to get faces done without them ending up as terrifying as the stumpy model attempts!
